Position Summary:
The Corporate & External Affairs (CEA) function at CSL is a newly formed team, integrating the historic Policy, Advocacy, and Government Affairs teams with the Communications function. Our mission is to create sustainable value for our business, our people, and the communities we serve through strategic partnerships and by driving CSL’s reach, influence, and impact.
The CEA Strategy & Insights team is a new team within CEA that aims to amplify CEA’s impact by bringing our leaders insightful analysis and evidenced advice around their most pressing strategic dilemmas and far-reaching decisions. As a centre of excellence within CEA, we focus on the most impactful problems, bringing both internal and external perspectives to bear and working collaboratively with partners across CEA and broader CSL business.
Our three areas of focus include:
- Cross-CEA project work to respond to key CEALT/GLG strategic corporate affairs questions
- Actively monitoring and interpreting the external environment for media, social, and wider political/economic trends that may have potential impact on CSL
- Measuring CEAs impact across our communications and policy work to support prioritisation and goal setting
The Strategy and Insights Director will be responsible for leading and delivering high-impact strategic projects across CEA, providing data-driven insights, and ensuring that senior leadership has the intelligence needed to make informed decisions.
The role will primarily focus on delivering top-priority projects in consultation with the Head of Strategy and Insights in response to key questions from senior executives, while also supporting the team’s broader mandate in environmental monitoring and impact measurement.
As an early joiner to a new team, this role will be critical in shaping the future of the team as we build a future-proof CEA organization and will be an active strategic thought leader
Based in Maidenhead with flexible working, and ability to travel infrequently
Responsibilities include: -
Cross-CEA Strategic Projects (primary focus)
- Contribute and lead high-priority strategic initiatives that address key CEA challenges, working across the CEA function and with senior stakeholders.
- Provide analytical and strategic guidance to the CEA Leadership Team (CEALT) and Global Leadership Group (GLG) on corporate affairs-related questions
- Conduct in-depth analysis and provide strategic insights for relevant business leaders to enable decision-making on key Corporate & External Affairs initiatives.
- Example projects could include:
- Developing a strategy for CSL to maximise access to novel funding sources and government partnerships to accelerate pipeline development and build innovative multi-party collaborations.
- Strengthen CSL’s coalition-building strategy via a strategic review of trade association memberships and broad stakeholder and influencer-mapping
- Transform CSL’s external engagement strategy via identification and adoption of novel and disruptive channels and approaches to maximise reach and impact
Measuring CEA impact
- Develop and refine methodologies to measure the effectiveness of CEA’s communications and policy initiatives.
- Support data-driven decision-making by implementing clear metrics and performance indicators to track progress and guide strategic priorities.
- Provide insights to help CEA leadership set and adjust goals based on impact assessments.
External trends analysis
- Analyse and interpret external trends and their potential impact on CSL with a focus on gathering data on competitors and peer companies to analyse strategy, activities, and implications for CSL positioning. Example projects could include:
- Comparing competitor messaging and approaches for investor events to set context for our communications activity to investors.
- Analysing reputation data to monitor relative impact on CSL vs competitors of reputation-driving activity or wider industry sentiment shifts.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop, implement, and maintain relevant data and analytics and drive impact from analysis through effectively sharing impactful insights.
- Prepare and present reports and presentations to senior executives to enable informed decisions.
- Activate and support a culture of data-driven decision-making by fostering the effective utilisation of metrics and analytics among business leaders.
Thought leadership and team development
- Play an active role in shaping the direction of the Strategy & Insights team, contributing to its long-term vision and capabilities.
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, providing thought leadership on corporate affairs strategy and decision-making.
- Champion a culture of data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement within the CEA function.
Qualifications, Skill and Experience: -
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Public Policy, or a scientific discipline related field, or equivalent additional professional experience
- Further education (Master’s degree, MBA, PhD, professional qualification or equivalent) is preferred.
- Significant relevant experience in strategy consulting, corporate affairs, academia or a related field, including significant experience working in pharmaceuticals, biotech or vaccines (specific experience of plasma derived therapies a plus)
- Exposure to corporate affairs issues and questions through project work looking at public company external positioning, government affairs interactions, industry association partnerships etc.
- A proven track record of using data and insight to influence senior executive decision making as well as stakeholders at all levels of an organisation
- Experience operating in a matrix environment, collaborating across functions to drive outcomes and influencing without authority with strong interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights.
- Strategic thinking with the ability to develop and implement effective strategies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with cross-functional teams and deliver results within deadlines.
