WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Independence Lake Preserve Assistant will have the opportunity to assist with the operation and maintenance of the Nature Conservancy's Independence Lake Preserve. The Preserve is a 2,300-acre natural preserve situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, approximately 15 miles north of Truckee, CA. The Preserve Assistant will work with a team that includes TNC staff, scientists, volunteers, government and non-profit organizations in the day-to-day management and conservation of the preserve. The Preserve Assistant's time will be spent working in the field with volunteers, various partner agencies, contractors, managing public access, and providing direction to the in-basin watercraft program under the supervision of the Independence Lake Preserve Manager. This position requires working independently and as part of a team, sometimes in difficult physical conditions. This is a 6-month seasonal position beginning in May 2025. Employment may be extended at a later date based on the availability of funding for the position. The Preserve Assistant will be expected to live at the Preserve in a camper/travel trailer provided by The Nature Conservancy.

Interested in maintaining preserve areas frequented by the visiting public? How about interacting with the public on nearly a daily basis, including assisting with operation of an on-site watercraft program and offering visitors a safe and positive experience with the Conservancy, and monitoring California's Boater Card requirement for the operation of power boats. You can monitor for the presence of invasive species and removing invasive species, as appropriate. How about some management tasks including but not limited to: electric fence maintenance and construction, building and equipment maintenance, trail layout and clearing, posting signs and other tasks as necessary. Includes preparation for seasonal opening and closing of the preserve.

We're looking for someone who is passionate, motivated, and a problem-solver. Someone who can maintain preserve buildings, tools, and equipment (e.g., generators, solar arrays, water systems, motorboats, kayaks, etc.). WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  • High school diploma or GED and 1 year's training in science-related field or related experience in land management..
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., power tools, chainsaw, 2-way radios, kayaks, motorboats etc.).
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certification as required. (e.g., First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application and CA Boater Card)
  • Ability to work under close supervision or infrequent supervision, while performing outdoor work.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 1-2 years' experience in land management or related field.
  • Being comfortable interacting with a variety of people ranging from anglers to wildlife enthusiasts to ranchers.
  • Basic understanding of fish ecology and ability to identify common local fish species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. motorized watercraft, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, Recreational vehicle power systems.
  • Familiarity with experience maintaining or installing off grid solar and communications devices (remote cameras, satellite communication devices).
  • Knowledge and understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource conservation or a similar field with an emphasis on fisheries restoration.
  • PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.


SALARY INFORMATION
The starting pay for a candidate selected for this position is a range of $ 19.50 - $21.50/hour for a 40 hour work week. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
