Position Summary:

Reporting to Vice President, Patient Advocacy, the Director, Strategic Alliances & Advocacy, will be responsible for building strategic alliances and advocacy campaigns and initiatives to support US policy, regulatory, commercial, and R&D priorities of Ultragenyx as part of Corporate Affairs. The incumbent will also lead Patient Advocacy material development, including the advocacy website, newsletter, and corporate materials. Finally, the incumbent will be responsible for patient advocacy engagement and strategy for 1-2 Programs in early-stage development. The Director will collaborate with a number of internal stakeholders including Corporate Communications, Policy & Government Affairs, the Program Teams, Legal / Compliance / Regulatory, Medical Affairs, Clinical Operations & Development, and Commercial / Brand Strategy. The Director should be located in the Boston or Washington, DC areas with the expectation to be in the Somerville, MA office on a regular basis.

Work Model: 

Remote: Officially documented as working full-time from home, with travel to Ultragenyx's offices or other locations on occasion as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategic alliances in coordination with US Policy & Government Affairs and other internal teams to support public affairs strategies aligned with business objectives
  • Recruit and cultivate a well-developed network in the rare and ultrarare community that provides access to key stakeholders, critical intelligence, and ability to address future policy and regulatory challenges
  • Engage and educate advocacy leaders as well as rare and ultra-rare grass-tops leaders on Ultragenyx policy and regulatory priorities
  • Represent Ultragenyx at key alliance engagements and stakeholder meetings in Washington, DC and across US as necessary
  • Lead development and management of Patient Advocacy assets, including newsletter, recruitment campaigns, website, community letters, corporate brochures and materials, internal / external patient storytelling, and partnership opportunities
  • Support the Corporate Communications plan by elevating engagement with advocacy organizations across multiple channels and ensuring tight alignment / awareness of Patient Advocacy calendar with internal teams
  • Develop innovate ways of engaging patient and external stakeholder communities across platforms, including through activation and grass-tops campaigns
  • Develop and execute global patient advocacy strategy across different stages of asset development in key markets for Ultragenyx
  • Build trustful relationships with patient advocacy groups and community leaders to ensure productive partnerships and alliance
  • Build and maintain Patient Advocacy annual plan for specific programs and budget in alignment with cross-functional colleagues

Requirements:

  • 8+years of industry experience and 5+ years of external engagement experience
  • Excellent communications skills (including written and oral) and strong interpersonal skills that can build and progress relationships internally as well as externally
  • Demonstrated experience building communications materials and ensuring appropriate Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory reviews
  • Experience developing and managing annualized patient advocacy plans and budgets
  • Solid understanding of drug development, regulatory, and commercial processes at a global level
  • Experience developing and executing alliance and public affairs campaigns supportive of corporate objectives
  • Experience building corporate / advocacy materials and taking them through appropriate review processes
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks, and successfully management multiple projects in a matrixed organization
  • Experience in rare disease preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Boston or Washington, DC – based #LI-CS1 #LI-Remote

The typical annual salary range for this full-time position is listed below. This range reflects the characteristics of the job, such as required skills and qualifications and is based on the office location noted in this job posting. The range may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.


This position is eligible for annual bonus and equity incentives. Actual individual pay is determined by demonstrated experience and internal equity alignment.
