  • Rotating morning and evening shifts
    • 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
    • 9:30 am - 6:00 pm
    • 2:30 pm - 10:30 pm
  • 1 weekend per month

Job Description:

The perioperative clinical pharmacist is responsible for oversight of the medication management process in perioperative services at Duke University Hospital(locations include the Operating Room (OR) Pharmacy Satellites operations in DukeNorth, Duke Medici nePavilion, the Duke EyeCenter, and all associated operating rooms and the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). The perioperative clinical pharmacist will be responsible for applying established medication management policies including drug distribution, inventory control, waste reduction, drug use optimization, formulary enforcement, clinical services, quality assurance, and involvement in education and training of learners. The clinical pharmacist will serve as a resource to the surgery, nursing, anesthesia, and ancillary team members. They will strive to maintain the highest standards in customer service and foster positive and collaborative relation ships with the perioperative team members. The clinical pharmacist must be able to display effective communication techniques, use strategic and critical thinking skills, and utilize effective clinical and operations skills to triage problems appropriately. The pharmacist must have knowledge and understanding of: automated dispensing cabinets and their functionality, surgical care improvement projects (SCIP), electronic health records and the use of computerized physician order entry (CPOE), pain and controlled substance management in the inpatient critical care setting, USP 797, pharmacy inventory management, and an understanding of medication safety concepts.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level:

The following activities are components of the position to assist in meeting the major job responsibilities:

  • Review and monitor patient's medication therapy and orders written by appropriate caregivers for safety and efficacy considering specific patient conditions and health status; advise patient care team of issues with, or possible enhancements to, patient's medication therapy and document such interventions.
  • Prepare, label, and dispense medications for patientsin accordance with physicians' prescriptions; ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations pertaining to the dispensing of drugs and narcotics and the maintenance of required records.
  • Responsible for being familiar and stay abreast of information related to all drugs used in the setting, including drugs for general and regional anesthesia, neuromuscular blockade, analgesia, preoperative management, hemodynamic control, diagnosis and manipulation during surgery, prevention of infection, treatment of intraoperative emergencies, control of bleeding, and postoperativenausea and vomiting (PONV).
  • Ensure compliance with controlled substance distribution and control system (including method of distribution, records maintenance, ordering, storage, access, reconciliation, disposal, reporting and management of discrepancies/variances)
  • Provide drug information and educate caregivers, patients, and students regarding medications and their proper use and monitoring.
  • Oversee and monitor all aspects of the medication process; collect data and present reports and recommendations regarding issues with the medication systems.
  • Ensure that appropriate medications are available for patients and properly procured, prepared, stored, and maintained.
  • Supervise the process and technical personnel who assist in preparation, maintenance, and dispensing of drugs and supplies. Provide guidance to technical personnel as needed to maintain best practices.
  • Participates in orientation, training and continuing education programs for clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Demonstrate collaboration with inter and intra-departmental workgroups.
  • Serve as a mentor and preceptor for prospective students and residents.
  • Maintain current knowledge and critical thinking skills for managing drug shortages in the inpatient perioperative setting.
  • Communicate and inform leaders about acute critical drug shortages.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of regulatory standards that affects the role of a clinical pharmacist in the perioperative pharmacy setting.
  • Implement and monitor quality assurance activities in the pharmacy area.
  • Conduct, participate, or support clinical research in perioperative services.
  • Solicits/seeks performance feedback in order to enhance work culture.
  • Consistently works on self-awareness and development to enhance services and maintain positive professional relationships.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form.
  • Extensive knowledge of drug products, medical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and disease states.
  • Ability to work with information systems, automated and technical equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with various members of health care teams

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree OR BS Pharmacy Degree

Experience

  • With a BS Pharmacy degree, two years of pharmacy practice experience, or acceptable board certification, or completion of an accredited residency program and demonstrated ability to achieve positive patient outcomes in a similar environment is required.
  • With Doctor of Pharmacy degree, no experience is required.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

  • Licensed Pharmacist or eligible to practice pharmacy in North Carolina
